There are plenty of people out there who want to lose weight, but what about avoiding weight gain?
If you are sliding down a hill and want to go back up it wouldn’t the first step be to stop sliding?
Weight loss works in the same way.
If you have gained weight over the years I can guarantee it didn’t all come over night – it came consistently, year after year. It came from holiday gorging at Thanksgiving and Christmas, Birthday celebrations, Super Bowl parties, stressful days, and so on.
This weight gain came secretly and before you knew it you had gained 20, 30, or 40 pounds.
To stop this downhill slide try one thing: Weigh yourself every day.
Now I know some of you out there might thing this is a bad idea or that this won’t work to stop your downhill slide, but think about this for a second:
How many overweight or obese people step on the scale every day, watch the number consistently rise, and do nothing?
We avoid doing the things that will be unpleasant for us and if you are overweight or obese you are probably avoiding getting on a scale because you are afraid of the number.
If you want to know the first step you can take to stop gaining weight I would say to step on the scale every day.
Weighing yourself every day will do a few things for you:
- Keep you accountable
- Give you concrete date on where you are at
- Influence your daily decisions
I’m not saying that I’m in love with a scale, but I will say that this is a powerful tool that you should be using if you want to lose weight.
Of course, looking at a scale is only part of the equation and you should really pay attention to your body composition – the amount of muscle and body fat you have – but using a scale to weigh yourself every day will at least get you started with weight loss.
Stop your slide, avoid weight gain, and take the steps towards weight loss.
